Strona: 19

The town dwellers gathered in associations and organisations fostered very carefully the local tradition celebrating important events and anniversaries.

In June 1932 the anniversary of Józef Chodorowicz took place(1877-1964), to celebrate 25 years of his work for the Craftmanship of Nowy Targ. (Photo No. 316) Józef Chodorowicz, a wealthy burgher of Nowy Targ run a renowned bricklayer's. After graduating in 1908 from Lvov's construction school he gained qualifications for planning and construction supervision. For several dozen of years he performed the function of the town's builder. Since 1913 he was the chairman of the Handicraftsmen and Manufacturers Association and for over 20 years he was the vice-chairman of the Nowy Targ's "Falcon".

The Volunteer Fire Department of Nowy Targ, the foundation of which dates back to 1881, paid attention to preserving its image and history for the next generations. It was one of the first professions in town which was perpetuated on photographs basically from the beginning of its activity. On the oldest photograph, taken around the year 1890, the firemen pose for a common portrait in front of the first fire station located on the Waksmundzka Street. (Photo No. 479) Pictures taken on 5 May 1907 by Stanisław Bochyński during the impressive celebrations of the 25th anniversary of founding the fire brigade also preserved until today. The first of them (Photo No. 492) was taken on the main square with the town hall in the background, in front of which a decoration with an occasional picture of Saint Florian, the patron of firemen (painted also by Bochyński) was set. We can see here members of the fire brigade in uniforms, a firemen brass band with their instruments, a fire engine, a banner, representatives of town authorities, "Falcon" members and sympathizers of the organisation included by the photographer in the broad frame of the photograph.

The second picture is a portrait (Photo No. 482, 481) on which there are gentlemen Giełczyński, Różański and Czubernat decorated with orders for 25 years of service. In the interwar period there were many occasional photographs taken. The celebrations of Saint Florian's in 1929 were very impressive, during which a new, splendid purchase of the fire brigade - „a motor fire-hose” - was consecrated on the main square. It was a modern for those times fire engine, purchased owing to the head of the department Franciszek Dworski and the chairman Józef Rayski with a great financial help on the part of the Town Council. In 1931 the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the fire brigade was celebrated. There was a service in St. Katherine's Church, a parade and a demonstration of combat exercises with a staging of a fire of the Town Hall.

The celebrations ended with a dance in town's park where the participants beautifully and harmoniously posed for a commemorative photograph. (Photo No. 201) In the picture of 1936 we can see firemen in front of the fire station on the Kościuszki Street , erected owing to the Municipal Council in 1911. (Photo No. 490) One can immediately notice that it is a highlander fire brigade because, in spite of the uniforms, many of the fire brigade member do not give up on wearing traditional, highlander trousers.

Events presented in the album "Nowy Targ" finish with photographs from July 1945, which registered the entry of the 16. "Kołobrzeski" Regiment of Infantry and the Polish Army to Nowy Targ, which were sent here to protect the southern borders of Poland within the regrouping after ending hostilities on the Western Front .
