Views of the town and its surroundings

Strona: 5

Nowy Targ, among many similar towns in the Małopolska region, is marked out by the fact that it is deeply entrenched in the scenery surrounding it. The specific location of the town by the confluence of the rivers – Czarny and Biały Dunajec, near the Gorce Mountains with their slopes falling mildly towards the Nowotarska Valley which, in turn, is closed between the massive and high Tatra Mountains, constitutes an unique phenomena and is considered to be the greatest value of Nowy Targ. The view of the town in the valley, with the Church tower and the tower of the Town Hall, with, arising in the background, peaks of the Tatra Mountains entranced and fascinated travelers and artists who solidified it on drawings, lithographics and pictures. Later, the motif of the town presented against a background of the Tatra Mountains appeared mainly on postcards.

In heritage of the photographers in Nowy Targ, there are few conventional representations. Interestingly, the topique theme of the town “from the distant” used in 19th century representations, appeared in photographs quite rarely. The panning shot, taken by an unknown author which can be found in the collection of the Museum (photo no. 393), treats the view of the town against a background of the Tatra Mountains covered with snow, in a static and pictorial manner. A hand-written caption in English expresses and defines the photographed view that someone wanted to share with others. May be it is longing of an emigrant for something lost that because of the photography appears to be close.

Moreover, as it may seem, the photography from the collection of the Museum taken by E. Morawetz in the late 1920s (Photo No. 326), was rather a coincidence. When Morawetz was hiking in the Tatra Mountains, together with his family, the peaks of the mountains suddenly appeared in all their majesty. And probably he wouldn’t be a photographer if he didn’t take a chance. In the frame, as it can be seen, the mountain chain is merging half-circularly creating the cadre for the elements registered on the first and the second background. Panorama of the city in the valley, with the dominant figure of Church’s tower, together with two characteristic feature constituted by the blocks of the Gimnazjum (en. junior high school), and the school buildings, complement each other symmetrically. The foreground is filled with waving cornfields and four persons who stopped for a while during their walk through the lane that is leading them upwards. Edwar Morawetz wasn’t essentially the photographer of landscapes, however he took few photos from the surroundings of Nowy Targ: he photographed, among others, the road leading to Turbacz (photo no. 02), the castle in Czorsztyn (photos no. 01, 508), rafting on the Dunajec River in the Pieniny Mountains (Photo no. 372, 373, 506) and building of the road in Sromowce (Photo No. 369).

In 1913 Morwetz took two scenic photos of Czarny Dunajec River under the St. Ann Hill, already after regulations of river had been made. However, as it is visible in the photo, the river is still flowing very moodily.
